Mountain biking in the Cairngorms can be challenging, but it largely depends on the specific trails and routes you choose to ride. Our tours can be adapted to any level of riders but the Cairngorms National Park offers a variety of terrain, from gentle forest trails to more technical and demanding routes. Some trails in the Cairngorms are suitable for beginners or those who prefer a more relaxed ride, with smoother paths and gentle gradients but the majority of our tours are riding big mountains in remote terrain and require a good intermediate level.

These trails often involve steep climbs, rocky descents, and potentially technical sections that require advanced skills and fitness. These routes can be physically demanding and may require a good skill level. You will not find many, if any jumps or drop in the Cairngorms but you will encounter the famous Scottish Water Bars and rock-hard granite slabs this destination is so famous for.

If you are riding the Cairngorms you're going to find yourself ascending around 1000m per day on average, the riding is generally quite exposed to the elements as well so on those days when Scotland's weather doesn't play ball you'll need to be made of stern stuff to make the most of your day. You'll be rewarded with some of the finest descents in Europe for your efforts as well as breathtaking scenery.

You should be comfortable navigating awkward obstacles you may encounter on the trail at speed, such as rocks, drainage ditches and weather ruts that the guide may not be able to fully detail before descending. You should also be comfortable doing this with a level of fatigue, the trails won't get easier just because you are tired! The ability to control your braking and track stand for extended periods of time is also important.

Tyres are one of the most important element of your Cairngorm mountain biking experience, the Scottish rocks will destroy anything under a double down compound, DH or Enduro tyres are recommended.
